Custom vs Item-Based Modifiers
Choose the right modifier type by understanding when a choice is just pricing and when it should also carry inventory meaning.
Who is this article for?
Choose Custom (Price Only) for a descriptive or pricing choice. Choose Item Based (Uses Inventory) when the option should stay linked to a catalog variation and its stock or recipe.
Custom Modifiers
A custom modifier has a name, optional description, Price Adjustment and availability setting. Use it for a choice that does not need tracked stock consumption, such as a preparation preference or an untracked surcharge.
If an extra ingredient must affect inventory and cost, link it through an item-based modifier rather than relying on its name alone.
Item-Based Modifiers
Select the item and variation in the modifier's item picker. Crunch fills the name from the selection and keeps the option linked to that variation.
- Price Adjustment changes the customer-facing charge.
- Amount Adjustment specifies how much inventory one selection consumes, in the linked item's unit.
- Leaving Amount Adjustment empty uses the item's default; it does not make the modifier price-only.
Check the linked variation and quantity carefully. For a recipe-backed option, later sales-order detail can show the associated ingredients where that breakdown is stored on the order.
Add the Option
Open the saved Modifier List, add a modifier, choose its type and complete the relevant fields. Save it, then check its availability and price.
You can also use the list's auto-import rules to create item-based options from matching variations.
Set Selection Rules Separately
Required, Minimum Selections and Maximum Selections belong to the list. They decide how many options can be chosen; the modifier type decides what each option does.
