Users creating tax rates before importing or publishing their catalog

The Taxes step in the onboarding workspace lets you create tax rates before you finish setup. If you already operate on Square, review the taxes brought in by the Square seed before adding duplicates. In the current journey, this step is optional, but it sits early in the onboarding sequence because tax data can affect later catalog work.

What the Tax Step Lets You Do

The current onboarding tax form creates one tax at a time with:

  • Tax name
  • Rate (%)
  • Description
  • Active tax toggle

When a tax is created successfully, it is written to the workspace immediately and the tax step is marked complete. This action does not create an onboarding draft for later approval.

How to Create a Tax

1

Open Taxes from the onboarding workspace.

2

Enter the Tax name, such as VAT, GST, or Sales Tax.

3

Enter the Rate (%) between 0 and 100.

4

Optionally add a Description and decide whether the tax should be active right away.

5

Click Create Tax.

If you add at least one tax, the panel also gives you a Done button so you can close the step after reviewing the created tax list.

When It Is Okay to Skip Taxes

In the current onboarding UI, Taxes is marked as optional. That means you can skip it and continue if:

  • you are still confirming the correct tax rules
  • you want to finish the rest of onboarding first
  • you plan to create taxes later from the dashboard

When You Should Not Skip It

You should strongly consider setting up taxes before going live if:

  • your items need the correct tax rate from day one
  • you are preparing a catalog import that depends on known tax values
  • you want readiness and publish steps to reflect a more complete setup

Tip

Use Let Alex do this for help entering tax data you have already confirmed. Provide the tax name and applicable rate; check the proposed setup before applying it.

What Happens After You Leave the Step

Even though taxes are optional, skipping them does not lose your place. If onboarding is still incomplete, the dashboard banner can bring you back to the workspace later to finish taxes before publishing.
